Courageous Creativity in Business Interview Series: Jamie Ridler

As you know, one of the things I’m passionate about is Courageous Creativity. I’m fascinated by how it shows up in my life and in other creative entrepreneurs. This week’s edition of the Courageous Creativity in Business Interview Series is a video interview I did with Jamie Ridler, Creative Living Coach at Jamie Ridler Studios.  I did an extensive interview with Jamie about how she marries art, creativity, and business together! Find out more about how this creative soul struggles with doing creative things “off the cuff” – and how she manages it!

2014 Jamie RidlerFrom her first business, laundering Barbie clothes, to the founding of Jamie Ridler Studios, an online hub for bringing creativity to life, Jamie has always been a creative with entrepreneurial leanings. Perhaps with her MBA dad and artist mom, that was inevitable!

Jamie’s heart and experience are deeply rooted in the expressive arts, from her early love of dance to her Masters degree in Theatre. As performer, she’s appeared most often as archetypes and icons with roles ranging from Imagination (aka Imogen Nation) and Papa Smurf to The Authoritative Voice and Sexual Desire. She’s created and directed shows that turned academic research into performance art and that interpreted the colour blue through rants and movement.

She lives outside the box.

Now Jamie channels her energy into online invocations to a more creative life, creating space and opportunity for each of us to discover and express our creative selves in new and powerful ways. On her popular podcast, Creative Living with Jamie, Jamie shares tips and strategies for creative living and interviews both aspiring creatives and rock stars like Julia Cameron, Brene Brown and Danielle LaPorte about their creative lives.

Courageous Creativity in Business Interview Series: Stephanie Levy

Stephanie Levy graffiti berlin webAs you know, one of the things I’m passionate about is Courageous Creativity.  I’m fascinated by how it shows up in my life and in other creative entrepreneurs.  This week’s edition of the Courageous Creativity in Business Interview Series features Stephanie Levy, a mixed media artist originally from Tennessee, now living in her soul city of Berlin, Germany.

Tell us a little more about your business.

I lead online courses and live workshops in Berlin to help women from around the world discover and follow their creative paths.  One of the best parts about my courses is that participants have the opportunity to connect and exchange with our friendly, supportive international creative community.

Find out more about my upcoming courses and workshops here:

I love hearing your southern Tennessee accent with pictures of urban – global Berlin.  Can you tell us more about how that come about and… what’s a southern girl like you doing in this new world city?

At age 24, I came to Berlin with a one way ticket right after my studies at age 24 with 2 suitcases! I was very nervous, but also very excited. It was a big adventure for me. I had a German boyfriend, so I wasn’t alone, but still – it was the first time for me to live in a large city like Berlin, I didn’t speak German yet, and at that time – in 1996 – we were living in East Berlin with coal heating, no bathtub or shower in the apartment, the building was still full of bullet holes from WWII, our rent was about 75 Euros per month (100 dollars, in 1996!) and no one spoke English in my neighborhood. It was a thrilling and kind of crazy time.

Berlin is now one of the most popular cities in Europe, and gets the most visitors now right after Paris and London. I love the relaxed, yet creative and vibrant atmosphere here and it has become a mecca for artists, musicians, and other creatives from around the world.

You can read more about why I love Berlin and find out about the new Art + Adventure workshops I’m offering in Berlin this summer here:

Do you have any daily rituals that help to ground you or help open up your creativity?

I love taking walks outside and this helps me most of all. I also like taking photos when I walk, but sometimes I leave my smartphone at home so that I won’t be tempted to check my email and get caught up with social media while walking around. The best thing for me and my creativity are to walk, look around, empty my mind and notice what is going on in “real life” right in front of my eyes 🙂

What do you do when you feel stuck or blocked on a project?

stephanie levy collage2 webI get out my notebook or even a piece of paper and start brainstorming. Usually making notes is very good on helping me clear my thoughts and when I have things down in written form, they tend to take shape much better than when they are just floating around in my mind. Writing down my ideas is the first step in making my ideas and dreams become a reality! This really works 🙂

Where do you see the next edge of your Courageous Creativity?  Where are you being called to go that feels like a brave journey?

The next big creative project I’d like to work on is to write and publish a book based on some of my e-course material. It has always been my dream to publish a book, and the next step for me is to make this dream a reality too!

What encouraging words can you offer to our community about claiming their Courageous Creativity in Business?

I truly believe that we are all creative, but we just have to get ourselves together, be brave and begin! Wherever we are now, it doesn’t matter, we all start somewhere! And I also believe that for the most part – if you can dream it, you can do it. If there is something you are burning to do, you should go after this dream, our lives are so short and there is no time to waste.

In the words of Marie Beynon Ray: “Begin doing what you want to do now. We are not living in eternity. We have only this moment, sparkling like a star in our hand–and melting like a snowflake.”

Where can our creative community find out more about you and your business?
